Jacobs Institute of Women's Health Announces 2019 Schiffer Fellows

The Jacobs Institute of Women's Health is pleased to announce selection of two MPH students and two DrPH students as recipients of the Clara Schiffer Fellowship for Women’s Health for 2019. The fellowship will enable these Milken Institute School of Public Health students to work on projects addressing several different aspects of women's health: the relationship between personal care products and uterine fibroids; contraceptive use and teen pregnancies in Washington, DC; gender norms and maternal anemia in rural India; and breastfeeding norms among African American women. The 2019 recipients of the Clara Schiffer Fellowship for Women’s Health are:

The Schiffer Fellowship honors the legacy of social justice advocate and GW supporter Clara Schiffer by supporting graduate students who participate in student- and faculty-directed research designed to improve women’s health and facilitate communication around women’s health issues.

The 2019 fellows will participate in the following research projects:

  • Research Project: Personal Care Product Use and Fibroid Outcomes (Dinh) 
  • Research Project: Factors Influencing Effective Contraceptive Use among Reproductive Aged Women in Washington, DC (Thompson) 
  • Dissertation Research: Unpacking the Relationship between Social Norms and Behavior: How Social Norms and Gender Norms affect Women’s Use of Iron Supplements in Rural India (Sedlander)
  • Dissertation Research: Breastfeeding Norms among African American Women: Implications for Reducing Cancer Disparities (Villalobos)
