Jacobs Institute of Women's Health Announces 2018 Schiffer Fellows

The Jacobs Institute of Women's Health is pleased to announce selection of two MPH students and one DrPH student as recipients of the Clara Schiffer Fellowship for Women’s Health for 2018. The fellowship will enable these Milken Institute School of Public Health students to work on projects addressing several different aspects of women's health: iron deficiency among women in India; breastfeeding in black and Latina women; and contraceptive care for community health center patients. The 2018 recipients of the Clara Schiffer Fellowship for Women’s Health are:
 
Masters Fellows:
Aika Aluc, MPH Student, Maternal and Child Health; Faculty Mentor: Rajiv Rimal, PhD 
Nwanneamaka Ume, MPH Student, Global Health Epidemiology and Disease Control; Faculty Mentor: Amira Roess, PhD, MPH 

Doctoral Fellow:
Julia Strasser, DrPH (c), MPH, Health Policy; Faculty Mentor: Anne Rossier Markus, JD, PhD, MHS

The Schiffer Fellowship honors the legacy of social justice advocate and GW supporter Clara Schiffer by supporting graduate students who participate in student- and faculty-directed research designed to improve women’s health and facilitate communication around women’s health issues. 

The 2018 fellows will participate in the following research projects:

  • Research Project: Designing and implementing a maternal iron deficiency and anemia control strategy in India using a social norms approach and a Self Help Groups (SHGs) platform (Aluc) 
  • Research Project: The Impacts of Breastfeeding and Other Maternal Health Factors on the Microbiome of Black and Latino infants (Ume) 
  • Dissertation Research: Access to High Quality Contraceptive Care at Community Health Centers: Current Practices, Barriers, and Facilitators for Providing a One-Year Supply of Oral Contraception On-Site (Strasser)
