Abortion and Contraception Workforce
Jacobs Institute Director Julia Strasser is one of the lead investigators on the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity’s reproductive health research project. This research project is the first of its kind and examines the composition, distribution, service provision, and characteristics of the national workforce providing contraception and abortion services in the US, as well as trends over time. Peer-reviewed publications, academic blogs, and reports from this research cover topics such as changes to the workforce during Covid-19, pharmacist prescribing of contraception, and ripple effects of penalizing abortion providers across other areas of healthcare services.
Interested researchers, policy-makers, and students can access an interactive map tracking the workforce providing prescription contraception at both the state and county levels here, and can request a de-identified version of the data to use in their work. Media coverage on the project’s findings, especially critical in light of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court decision, is available here.
